Background
3 million acres of land is converted to urban development each year in the United States. Urban development practices often drastically disturb and compact the soil profile.
SRES is a long-term study site of soil genesis, carbon, tree canopy growth and biomass. Some research questions we hope to answer are:
- Can we restore valuable soil functions to damaged urban soils?
- Which soil rehabilitation practices work the best?
- How does this affect tree growth and other ecosystem services?

Vegetation and topsoil were scraped and the area was compacted to a bulk density of 2 g/cm3.
